ANZAC DAY

ANZAC DAY – AUSTRALIAN PUBLIC HOLIDAY
Anzac Day is a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand , originally commemorated by both countries on 25 April every year to honour the members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC)who fought at Gallipoliin the Ottoman Empire during World War I. It now more broadly commemorates all those who died and served in military operations for their countries Anzac Day is also observed in the Cook Islands, Niue, Pitcairn and Tonga It is no longer observed as a national holiday in Papua New Guinea and Samoa
What does it mean today?
Australians recognise 25 April as an occasion of national remembrance, which takes two forms. Commemorative services are held at dawn – the time of the original landing – across the nation. Later in the day, ex-servicemen and women meet to take part in marches through the major cities and in many smaller centres. Commemorative ceremonies are more formal and are held at war memorials around the country. In these ways, ANZAC Day is a time when Australians reflect on the many different meanings of war.
LEST WE FORGET
